WSO Young People’s Concert takes ‘Music, Noise and Silence’ on Tour

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s annual Young People’s Concert tour, conducted by Music Director Andre Raphel, this year features the Magic Circle Mime Company’s program, “Music, Noise and Silence.”

This educational tour reaches more than 4,000 area elementary school students from Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties in West Virginia, Belmont and Jefferson counties in Ohio, and Washington County in Pennsylvania. Performances run from Tuesday, April 3, through Friday, April 6.

In the program, three meddlesome spirits – Music, Noise and Silence – invade symphony hall. The concert seems doomed as Silence and Noise attempt to seize control of the orchestra. Only with the help of the audience and Music will the conductor be able to break the fierce grip of Noise and bring harmony back to the orchestra.

“The ‘Music, Noise and Silence’ program of Magic Circle Mime Company is brilliant,” said Raphel. “The selections focus on three spirits. Through the spirits Noise and Silence, students discover how a concert can be disrupted and with the magic of Music can be put back on track. With works by Suppe, Ives, Bach and Grofe, it’s a fun program with great humor.”

Because of the impact the Young People’s Concert tour has on area students, it exemplifies the Wheeling Symphony’s mission to provide orchestral programs that entertain, educate and enhance the quality of life for the community and its residents.

“This year’s YPC Tour brings music to students throughout the region. I’m especially happy that it will again take the Wheeling Symphony to play concerts in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia,” Raphel said.

The Young People’s Concert Tour is made possible by the following sponsors: National Endowment for the Arts, Helen J. Prince Foundation, Schenk Charitable Trust, Hess Family Foundation, W.E. Stone Foundation, Sands Charitable Trust, Robert L. and Helen E. Levenson Charitable Trust, and Wheeling Hospital.
