Opening Night At The Symphony, In Pictures

The Wheeling Symphony kicked off its latest season recently with “The Ultimate Symphonic Rock Show,” a showcase of classic rock songs that came alive with orchestral accompaniment. Maestro André Raphel and the orchestra were joined onstage by vocalist Jean Meilleur and the Jeans ‘N Classics band. Together they put on an incredible show for the Capitol Theatre crowd, with renditions of songs from Electric Light Orchestra, the Moody Blues, Peter Gabriel, and more. Singer Meilleur was spot-on in mimicking original voices, and the sight and sound of the entire orchestra added a dimension of excitement to the performance.

If you haven’t been to the symphony in a while (or ever), there’s a good chance that you have some preconceived notions about it that are outdated. Today’s symphony experience is a lot more fun than you probably expect, with highlights that include the following:

  • The atmosphere is relaxed. You don’t have to worry about your bowtie being crooked because you probably won’t be wearing one. The show is about the music, not outdressing your fellows.
  • It’s inexpensive. Single tickets start at just $18.50, and there’s not a bad seat in the Capitol. Speaking of seats, they’re new and quite comfortable.
  • You can enjoy a beverage during the performance. Wine and beer are served in the concession area.
  • The music is great. Whether you’re into classical or not, the diverse range of music on the schedule means you’re sure to find at least a few shows that will move you.

Weelunk photographer Wallis brought her trusty Nikon to the Symphonic Rock Show, and to the Opening Night reception held afterward for donors and subscribers. The reception was held in the alley between the theatre and the suspension bridge, and the unique perspective, combined with some beautiful September weather, made for probably the best party atmosphere she’s ever photographed.
