Weelunk’s Weekend Top 5

We all have heard it over, and over, and over again: “There’s nothing to do in Wheeling.”  Well that clashes with our motto, which is “Do Something.”  How can you Do Something when there is nothing to do?  Hmmmm……

Well, let’s all agree that the weather really sucked this winter, and we can use that as a part of an excuse for inactivity.  But as the Friendly City awakens from its Ohio Valley grey-sky hibernation, we are here to tell you there’s a lot to do.  In fact, there is so much going on this weekend, that we may even dare to say there is too much to do!

We announced a major upgrade to our calendar last month.  So you can go there to find all of the events going on, but the point of this post is to make it even easier for you to go out and Do Something.  Here is what we recommend. (FYI the ranking formula is top secret, but it involves a cocktail of: quality of entertainment, greatest impact on Wheeling’s future, and best opportunity to run into a Weelunk photographer.)

Dessert with Antiques Preview Party

Friday Night

antiques_dessert

There is nothing like the pairing of “sweet” with “really old stuff that’s valuable.”  Oglebay Institute’s preview of its very big Antique Show is a really fun time.  Drink your favorite beverage and munch on some great desserts as you walk through and have the opportunity to scope out cool antiques and talk with the vendors.  Then you can go home, research values online, and come back on Saturday and have an inside track on landing that one thing that you really must have.

Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II

Saturday Night

WE2

Subscribe to Weelunk

Something for every age.  Bugs, Wiley, Daffy + our wonderful Wheeling Symphony = HELLO, of course, this is a no-brainer.  By the way there hasn’t been this much buzz about a pairing of screen and music since we found out that Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon pairs perfectly with the Wizard of OZ. (Watch: Dark Side of the Rainbow).

Two Bridges at Wheeling Island Casino

Saturday Night

This band’s last form was the “Trainjumpers,” and now with the same core group, Two Bridges already is one of Weelunk’s favorite bands.  If you are looking for something a bit more funky and soulful versus fairly looney (see above), head to Wheeling Island Saturday; you will not be disappointed.

Preview “Appalachian Soul” here: Itunes.

Living Green: Rain Barrel Workshop

Saturday Morning

Learn how t0 take advantage of those April showers, save money, and maybe even teach California a thing or two about water conservation.  This Saturday morning event at the Schrader Center will be a good investment of your time.

The Ohio County Board of Education Meeting

Monday Night (We know. Let’s call it an extended weekend.)

IMG_4642

It has been the talk of the town the last few weeks.  Should female board members Sarah Koegler and Christine Carder be allowed to continue to call-in to meetings as needed, as the law and board policy states?  Or should they have to be there in person to have their voices heard, and votes counted?  Have an opinion?  Well, Do Something, and be at the board office by 5:45 so you can sign-up to speak for five minutes.
