Dogs Get Their Day in the Sun – National Dog Day

Friday August 26, is National Dog Day and Oglebay and Wheeling Park are joining the celebration. You and your pooch can enjoy a wide array of activities that will include walks with a Veterinarian, demonstrations, free microchipping, adoption opportunities and much more.

The activities at Wheeling Park kick off with a demonstration by the Upper Ohio Valley Obedience Training Club at 9:00 am on the ice rink. The demonstration will include canine obedience as well as an obstacle course and will be followed by the opportunity for some visitors and their dogs to participate following the demonstration.

At 10:00 am, Wheeling Police officer Garrett Pugh and his K-9 Declan, will do a brief demonstration and talk about their duties and then lead a walk around the pool and the lake.

The Ohio County Animal Shelter will have dogs on the ice rink available for adoption from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Dr. James Radcliffe of Town and Country Inc., will lead a walk from the ice rink at 2pm. This walk will include a few remarks from the vet at 2:00 and be followed by a walk around the pool and lake where dog owners will have the opportunity to talk more with Dr. Radcliffe.

The final demonstration by the Upper Ohio Valley Obedience Training Club will be at 3:00 am on the ice rink. The demonstration will include the same activities as the 9:00 ampresentation.

Dr. Jodi Oelschlager of Family Pet Practice will present a program on alternative health therapies for dogs at 6pm on the ice rink.

The day at Wheeling Park will conclude with the Family Fun Day showing of a dog themed family movie at the amphitheater at 8:30 pm.

National Dog Day at Oglebay will start at 9:00 am with a talk and walk with Dr. Karl Yurko of KEY Animal Hospital. The walk will start at the Wagon Shed Shelter, located above the playground by Schenk Lake.

The Marshall County Animal Shelter will be at the Wagon Shed Shelter from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm with a number of dogs ready for adoption. The adoption event will feature half price adoption fees sponsored by Wheeling Volkswagen Subaru.

There will also be a free microchipping clinic, underwritten by the Ohio County SPCA at the shelter from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The microchipping is free to the first 50 dogs and pet owners must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. The microchipping will be done by Dr. Allison Bertram from the Tiffany Dlesk Spay/Neuter Clinic.

The final event of the day at Oglebay will be a talk and walk with Dr. Todd Moores at 5:00 pm. The walk will start at the Wagon Shed Shelter and loop around the trails.

In honor of the special dog day, both Wheeling Park and Oglebay will offer buy one hot DOG at the regular price and get one free. This offer is at the White Palace and Schenk Lake all day.
