Wheeling’s Twelfth Night Ball Returns: A Night of History, Fun, and Festive Revelry

The Origins of Twelfth Night

Twelfth Night has always been a time for celebration, marking the end of the holiday season. Celebrated on January 6, it’s the final day of the twelve days of Christmas and a day filled with tradition and festivity. The holiday commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus, and in many cultures, it was a day for feasting, music, and fun. In England, Twelfth Night became famous for masquerades and lively parties, where everyone—rich or poor—could join in the revelry.

Reviving a Community Tradition

Wheeling first embraced the tradition of the Twelfth Night Ball in 1929, when St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church hosted its inaugural celebration. The event featured a playful mock court of lords and ladies, along with creatively named foods that added to the festive atmosphere.

Fast forward to 2019, when Jay Frey, head of the Wheeling 250 Committee, revived the tradition as part of the city’s 250th anniversary celebrations. His goal was to create a memorable event that would bring the community together to celebrate Wheeling’s history and bright future.

The event was a huge success, featuring gourmet food, cocktails, and live music from local favorite Hit Play. Guests were encouraged to dress in costumes representing any time period from 1769 to 2019, which added to the excitement and uniqueness of the evening. However, the Twelfth Night Ball has not been held again—until now.

This year, Wheeling Heritage is once again bringing the beloved tradition back to life, offering a night filled with history, excitement, and community spirit.

The Twelfth Night Ball has long been a part of Wheeling’s social fabric, with costume balls once playing a key role in the city’s community events. Today, the ball continues to bring people together while supporting important preservation efforts for the city’s historic landmarks.

Supporting Wheeling’s History and Future

The Cause Behind the Ball

The Twelfth Night Costume Ball is more than just a night of fun—it’s a way to support Wheeling’s revitalization efforts. Proceeds from the event benefit the Wheeling Heritage Annual Appeal, which funds key preservation and community projects. The funds raised help support historic preservation, arts and culture initiatives, and small business development throughout Wheeling.

Thanks to past fundraisers like the Twelfth Night Ball, Wheeling Heritage has been able to make significant strides in preserving the city’s history. Notable successes include the revitalization of the Wheeling Gateway Visitor and Heritage Center, which now provides a beautiful view of the city, as well as ongoing restoration projects at Mt. Wood Cemetery and the SMART Centre. These efforts are made possible through community support and the generosity of event attendees.
