In honor of National Pi Day, we’re throwing it back to an article about a different kind of pie. Learn how one Wheeling bakery earned the title of “Best Pie in West Virginia” in 2021.
Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, or just in the mood for a sweet treat, Wheelingites know that Oliver’s Pies is the place to go. Now, thanks to Yelp and USA Today, Oliver’s Pies has earned the title “Best Pie in WV.”
The top pie shops in every state list, published by USA Today, was determined by Yelp reviews, as well as other reviews from respected sources including Zagat, Food & Wine, Eater, Thrillist, and The Daily Meal. Oliver’s Pies was previously featured on the list in 2018.
Owner and “pie man,” Jim Oliver, first learned how to make pies from his grandmother and has kept the tradition alive for over 30 years. “I’ve always been fascinated with working with my hands, and I feel like she’s with me every day when I’m rolling out dough,” said Oliver.
The family business unofficially began as a fundraiser to help Jim raise money for his son to compete on Team USA in South Korea at the World ITF Taekwon-Do Championship Tournament. After the success of the fundraiser, Jim and his wife Michelle, also known as the “pie lady”, decided to turn their passion into a business. In 2007 they opened their storefront in Centre Market, and have been busy ever since.
When asked to choose his favorite pie, it’s nearly impossible for Jim to choose. “If you look at my belly, you’ll see I Iove them all.” However, there are some clear frontrunners among his customers. “For the last few years, coconut cream pie has been our best-seller, and over the last several months our cheesecake has become very popular.”
Jim is thankful for the community support he’s received and acknowledges that it’s a key ingredient to his business’ success. “Since the list was published by USA Today, it’s been so nice to hear from folks wishing us well. We’ve even had a couple of people knock on our window from outside to give us a thumbs-up. It really makes us feel appreciated and that we’re a part of the community.”
If you want a slice of the best pie in West Virginia, check out their new menu and place your orders ahead of time. Since all of Oliver’s Pies are hand-made, it’s crucial to order at least 24-hours in advance to ensure that your sweet tooth is properly satisfied.
You can also get a taste of Oliver’s Pies at a number of local restaurants, including The Bridge Tavern in Downtown Wheeling, Rachel’s on 16th in East Wheeling, and Bob’s Lunch in Moundsville.
