Centre Market: Where History Meets Vibrant Culture

Wheeling is a city that thrives on community spirit and a deep respect for its history, and nowhere is this more evident than at Centre Market. As one of Wheeling’s most iconic locations, Centre Market has evolved from its 19th-century origins into a modern space that continues to bring people together through small business, local art, and culture.

A Historic Landmark Turned Cultural Center

Originally constructed in 1858, Centre Market served as an open-air market for Wheeling’s residents, part of a larger trend across developing cities at the time. Market houses were essential for community development, offering places for commerce and social interaction. Over 150 years later, Centre Market still stands, now reimagined as a vibrant center that continues to support Wheeling’s cultural and economic vitality.

Today, Centre Market is a dynamic space defined by its two historic market houses, surrounded by an array of small and local businesses. The market’s unique character is palpable, combining a sense of its rich history with a forward-looking, creative energy.

Art at the Heart of Centre Market

Over the past decade, local art initiatives have added an extra layer of charm to the area. Nearly ten years ago, artists answered a call to transform parking meters into unexpected canvases, giving residents and visitors a colorful first impression as they arrive. The artistic touch extends further: earlier this year, the Wheeling Arts and Cultural Commission introduced crosswalk murals, infusing art into everyday elements and solidifying Centre Market’s reputation as a living gallery.

“It was a pleasure to be granted the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team of artists around the community,” says Mat Robinson, one of the artists who worked on the parking meter project. “We shared the common goal of beautifying Centre Market—the greatest part of the effort was the teamwork. Being able to leave a mark of my work in the place that I have been fortunate to call home and that continues to inspire my creative endeavors.”

Community Connections and Revitalization

But the essence of Centre Market isn’t just its art or history—it’s the community it fosters. The market is a beloved gathering place, a local “third place” where residents and visitors can connect beyond home and work. Its walkability to other downtown locations makes it an essential cultural hub, one that ties together various facets of Wheeling life. Though the original use of the market house has shifted, Centre Market remains a crucial part of the city’s fabric, proving that revitalization can be as much about creating meaningful spaces for connection as it is about preserving historical architecture.

“I’m excited to see the support for our small business community continue to grow as more people learn about the variety of what we have to offer at Centre Market,” shares Centre Market Manager Brooke Price. “In 2025, I will also be working to maintain our historic lower market house with a new roof and updating the restroom facilities using our remaining ARPA funding.”

Small Business and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Centre Market’s importance as a small business incubator cannot be overstated. As Small Business Saturday approaches, the market shines as a testament to entrepreneurial spirit. It’s a place where dreams take shape, where owners of antique stores, coffee shops, art galleries, and restaurants can thrive. Every business adds a unique layer to the market’s eclectic atmosphere, offering something special for each visitor. The success of these local businesses is central to Centre Market’s story and to the larger revitalization efforts that make Wheeling a vibrant place to live and visit.

Looking to the Future

Centre Market continues to evolve, with future plans for revitalization that align with Wheeling’s ongoing transformation. From the moment a visitor steps onto its grounds—greeted by the colorful parking meters, engaging crosswalk art, and an eclectic mix of shops and eateries—it’s clear that Centre Market is more than a historic site; it’s a celebration of Wheeling’s past, present, and future. It captures the spirit of a city that values both tradition and innovation, making it a hub where culture and commerce coexist beautifully.
