Downtown Wheeling on Friday night evoked some of its former glory, as thousands of people thronged its sidewalks in a show of Christmas cheer. Unlike in, say, the 1950s, though, the crowds weren’t in town to do some shopping, but instead to enjoy the floats and displays of the Perkins Restaurant and Bakery Fantasy In Lights Parade. Encouraged by favorable weather, the masses of people along Main and Market Streets enjoyed visual and audible treats from a host of parade entries… but no candy. That tradition is now a thing of the past, but paradegoers seemed not to mind. Maybe all of the downtown offices humming with private pre- and post-parade parties provided a treat or two?
