The classic Christmas story of a little angel who is transformed from a celestial pest to the toast of the Heavenly Host comes to life onstage at Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre. The inspirational musical, “The Littlest Angel,” will be staged for two weekends — Dec. 6-8 and 13-14.
Filled with melody and mirth, the story follows the adventures — and misadventures — of Heaven’s youngest angel. Her singing is atrocious; her halo is always crooked; she’s a bit of a pest to the older angels; and she’s never on time. But she’s trying her best to become a full-fledged angel and ultimately prove her worthiness.
Other endearing characters include the irascible, yet lovable, Gatekeeper, the sympathetic Understanding Angel, the harried Heavenly Messenger and, of course, the Celestial Choir.
The charming score includes the engaging solos “Homesick” and “My Gift”; the enchanting duet, “The Little Things”; a variety of ensemble numbers ranging from the humorous “Have You Met the Littlest Angel?” to the triumphant “Sound the Harp and Horn!” and, finally, the heavenly title song “The Littlest Angel.” Towngate music director Lakin Weaver is the accompanist.
Towngate’s P.D. Gregg directs a talented ensemble of local actors. Cast members are: Evan Oslund, McKenna Halicky, Kelsey Ohler, Justin Swoyer, Logan Gillotte, Sarah Hamilton, Taylor Broadwater, Meghan Ross, Justin Swoyer, Josie Figaretti, Taylor Andrews, Anna Contraguerro, Gailya Dodd, Lliam Gerney, Patricia “Pitter Pat” Jeffers, Gianna Landis, Claire McFadden, Jana Lu Schodzinski, Clare Seibert and Ayden Swoyer.
“The Littlest Angel” is a family-friendly production that includes a “timely message of inclusion and second chances,” Gregg said.
The production is a true community effort with volunteer actors sharing their time and talents and area businesses providing financial and in-kind support. Unified Bank serves as corporate sponsor for Towngate’s entire season of community theater. Macy’s provided additional support for the holiday productions.
Evening performances of “The Littlest Angel” take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14. A matinee performance takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8.
