The Public Market, an entity of Grow Ohio Valley, is hosting a Summer Kick-Off Block Party on Thursday, June 29, to celebrate the beginning 0f Grow Ohio Valley’s Community Supported Agriculture season, summer, and local food. Jason Koegler, Grow Ohio Valley’s Executive Director, said, “It will be a great time with lots of Ohio Valley businesses showing up to promote the community, celebrate local food, and turn 14th Street into a party.”
During the event, Donnie D will provide live music inside, the Public Market Kitchen and South PAW Food Truck will have hot food along with the first official appearance of Midge’s Hot Dog Cart and, of course, the first CSA pick-up of the season will be happening. Multiple local businesses and organizations will also be in appearance, including; Ziegenfelders, NJ’s Kettle Corn, the FUN-raiser, the Mother Jones Center for Resilient Community, the Friendlier City Project, SMART Center, Power of Three Tie-Dye, Rust Belt Stained Glass, WVU Extension, Windswept Farm, Table 304, and Budding Wheeling.
“CSA season is always a good time, and it’ll be nice to start the season with a fun event like this,” said Grow Ohio Valley’s Farm Manager, Sarah Stec. “We’re looking forward to working with Eric Freeland, Oak Hill Farm, and Next 7 Organic Farm and getting what they’ve grown to people in the Ohio Valley.”
The CSA runs for 15 weeks, from June 29 through October 5. Each week CSA subscribers get a share of fresh local produce from farmers in the Ohio Valley, a newsletter about partner farms, and recipes for what is in the share that week. A full share is $450 for the season and contains 10-12 items per week, a partial share is $285 and contains 6-8 items per week. Payment plans are available, and customers paying with SNAP can receive shares at 50% off. The contents of every share vary depending on what is in season, but throughout the Summer customers can expect to receive berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, and much more.
