Wheeling Symphony Orchestra Debuts SoundBites Series

This Sunday, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra kicks off its new series SoundBites: An Extraordinary Culinary Musical Experience. Each concert will guide you in a different way with music selections from around the world paired with culinary delights from each nation prepared by Thomas Raymond, Executive Chef at Oglebay.

Guests will be taken on “An American Journey” this Sunday, Sept. 14 from 1:30- 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 – 8:80 p.m., starting in New York, traveling down through Virginia, into Pennsylvania and ending in Washington DC.

The featured work will be Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The performance will also include the world premiere of a living composer, Adolphus Hailstork, and his heartfelt piece for string orchestra Variations on Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Also on the program are pieces by American composers Jessie Montgomery and George Walker.

PAWS in the Park

Celebrate your pups with a day full of dog-friendly activities at Oglebay on Saturday, Sept. 13. The paw-ty begins with the eighth annual Drool in the Pool event from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Crispin Pool Center where you and your dog can take a dip in the pool before it closes for the season. Admission is $10 per dog, with all proceeds benefitting the care and conservation of the Oglebay Good Zoo.

Afterward, head to Schenk Lake for an afternoon of free fun with fido. Bring your camera for a PAW Patrol Meet and Greet from 1 – 2 p.m. Stick around for a K9 Police Meet and Greet from 2 – 2:30 p.m. You’ll meet Wheeling’s police K9 and hear from local officers about the training that they go through to help officers protect our community. The afternoon wraps up with PAW-rade and Pet-Owner-Look-Alike Contest at 3 p.m. Costumes are encouraged and the winner of the inaugural pet-owner-look-alike contest will receive a free one-night stay at one of Oglebay’s pet-friendly chalets!

The fun continues at the Wilson Lodge Courtyard in the evening with a second PAW Patrol Meet and Greet from 7:30 – 8 p.m. Stick around for a free outdoor screening of The Secret Life of Pets 2 at 8 p.m. Visit oglebay.com for more details.


People’s U

The current People’s University LIVESTREAM is titled Women’s Rights – Equal Rights Amendment. The People’s University is a free program for adults who wish to continue their education in the liberal arts, featuring courses taught by experts in each subject that enable patrons to pursue their goal of lifelong learning. People’s University classes are held from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursdays on YouTube Live and Facebook Live.

In honor of Constitution Day, this PU Livestream will focus on the amendment process in the context of the struggle for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The discussion will be led by Anne Marie Lofaso, Arthur B. Hodges Professor of Law at the West Virginia University College of Law. Attendees who ask a relevant question of the instructor toward the end of the program will be entered in a drawing to win an Ida Bell Wells tea towel.

Peoples University

Youth Services System Hosts Virtual Good Samaritan Tribute

The YSS Board of Directors will honor Pastor Chris Figaretti and the Vineyard Church on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. with a virtual Good Samaritan Tribute. The event will celebrate Pastor Chris and his congregation’s commitment and service to the most vulnerable in the Ohio Valley. An optional dinner prepared by Charlie Schlegel will be available for pick up or delivery. Tune in to the YSS Facebook Page or channel 14 for Comcast viewers to watch the Virtual Good Samaritan 2020 Tribute.

Outdoor Concert at Stifel

Local musician Roger Hoard will perform an outdoor concert on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. on the lawn at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Socially-distanced tables and chairs will be available and guests may bring lawn chairs and blankets. Wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Seating is limited and admission is $22.50. OM Outdoors

Join Generation Wheeling, in partnership with Wheeling Parks & Recreation, for a free outdoor yoga class at Market Plaza at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Generation Wheeling’s own Betsy Sweeny will lead an all-level, beginner-friendly, slow-flow class. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, bring your own mat, blocks and any other materials for the practice. Safe social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Welcome the changing seasons with a Sound Bath Meditation and Journaling session with Chelsey Keding. The event will be held at the Wheeling Heritage Port Amphitheater on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 6 – 7 p.m. Bring a journal, notebook or just a pen and paper, along with a mat and blanket or two for extra coziness. There will be plenty of space for distancing at the riverfront. Admission is $15 and can be purchased online.
