The City of Wheeling is seeking candidates interested in serving on its volunteer boards and commissions. This call for civic engagement coincides with Mayor Glenn Elliott’s 2018 State of the City address, where he recognized several citizens and companies for their community involvement.

“We are committed to inviting new voices to the table to fill current vacancies and look forward to engaging even more residents,” Mayor Elliott shared in his address.

Mayor Elliott, along with City Manager Robert Herron and City Clerk B.J. Delbert, reviewed the membership lists of the city’s boards and commissions. The following vacancies have been identified:

• Arts & Cultural Commission: Five openings

• Board of Zoning Appeals: One opening

• Planning Commission: Up to five openings

• Traffic Commission: Two openings

Residents interested in one or more of the commissions can submit their resume to the City Clerk via email (bdelbert@wheelingwv.gov) or mail (1500 Chapline St, Suite 303, Wheeling, WV 26003). A brief letter stating the commission(s) of interest should also be included.

About the Commissions:

Arts & Cultural Commission

Meetings: Second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. in the City Manager’s conference room

About: The Arts and Cultural Commission promotes and develops artistic and cultural activities and initiatives that stimulate economic development and advance the quality of life and vibrancy of the greater Wheeling area. The Commission shall consist of up to 25 members appointed by Council without regard to their political affiliations, but with regard to their knowledge and experience relating to its various committees (i.e. visual arts, performance arts, literature and history, marketing and development, and governance). All members of the Commission shall be residents of the City and/or Ohio County.

Board of Zoning Appeals

Meetings: Third Thursday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in Council Chambers

About: The powers and duties of the Board of Zoning Appeals include hearing appeals and variance granting and procedures pertaining to the City of Wheeling zoning code. The BZA shall consist of five residents of the City appointed by the Mayor with the consent of Council. Three of the members shall have been residents of the City for at least 10 years preceding the date of their appointment, and none of whom shall be members of the Planning Commission or hold any elective or appointive office in the City or Ohio County.

Planning Commission

Meetings: Second Monday of the month at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers

About: The Planning Commission is responsible for reviewing and recommending to Council land use and development in the City. The Commission should consist of not less than five nor more than 15 residents of the City who are qualified by knowledge and experience in matters pertaining to the development of the City, including representatives of business, industry, and labor. Members are nominated by the City Manager and confirmed by Council. Three-fifths of the members shall have been residents of the City for at least 10 years prior to appointment.

Traffic Commission

Meetings: Second Thursday of the month at 2 p.m. in Council Chambers

About: The duties of the Traffic Commission are to recommend rules and regulations concerning the parking of automobiles and other vehicles and to regulate such parking on the public thoroughfares in the City of Wheeling. Such recommendations shall be forwarded to Council in the form of ordinances, for action by Council. The Commission shall be composed of five residents of the City of Wheeling who shall be appointed by the Mayor and shall serve at the pleasure of Council. None of the members shall be State, County, or City officials.
