The Symphony Goes Hollywood On Thursday

Join the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Capitol Theatre for a performance of the Music of John Williams: Star Wars & More.  The WSO celebrates one of today’s foremost contemporary composers under the baton of music director and conductor Andre Raphel.

“Composer John Williams’ film music provides the soundtrack for many of the greatest film adventures of our time.  His gift for writing soaring themes which are so memorable have earned him 5 Academy Awards and 22 Grammys.  This concert highlights his music from the movies “Jaws”, “Superman”, “Jurassic Park”, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, “Star Wars” and more,” Raphel said about the concert.

Everyone knows the ominous yet minimalist theme Williams composed for the movie “Jaws”.  The theme heightens the audience’s suspense for an hour and 21-minutes before the shark actually appears on film. Remember the heart pounding chase scenes of Indiana Jones, or the anticipation as ET and Elliott bicycle into a full-moon sky to phone home? How about the majesty of Superman or the magic of Harry Potter?  Experience these musical moments and more live, performed by the WSO. Audience members of all ages are encouraged to come in costume for this family-friendly, pre-Halloween concert.

WSO Executive Director, Bruce Wheeler added “Movies have the power to transport audiences to new worlds and different times — to anywhere the imagination can conceive.  Feelings of suspense, drama, fantasy, action and more are amplified by the music that accompanies these journeys.  No contemporary composer has done more to enhance the audience’s experience with the power of music than John Williams.”
