As it happens every year, summer has suddenly slipped its way into fall. The nights are getting cooler, the leaves are starting to change, Oglebayfest is this weekend, and we’re only about a month out from Halloween! If you’re anything like us, you’re trying to figure out the best ways to check some classic, seasonal bucket list items off before autumn comes to an end. We’re here to offer some ideas for fun activities nearby, fall and Halloween-inspired menus around town, and hidden gem spots for fall foliage spotting in and around Wheeling!

Oglebayfest
October 3-5 (event timing varies) – Oglebay Resort, 465 Lodge Dr. “Celebrate community spirit at the 48th annual Oglebayfest. Enjoy artisan markets, delicious local foods, fun contests, a parade, fireworks, and more. Our own unique version of Oktoberfest, this special event celebrates our local community, and the historic legacy of our iconic park resort here in scenic Wheeling, West Virginia.” Weekend event highlights include a gourmet market, German rathskeller, a country fair fireworks, food vendors & shopping, a .5k beer dash, live music, and a parade! Boo at the Zoo
October 3-26 (Fridays 5-8 PM, weekends 11 AM-8 PM) – Good Zoo, 345 Zoo Circle “Join us for a month of festive and fall activities at Oglebay’s Boo at the Zoo. Enjoy treat stations, decorated pathways, and don’t forget your Halloween costumes.” Event highlights include spooky train rides, decorations, kid-friendly food, and spooky dance performances.

Halloween Movie Night at the Strand Theatre – The Conjuring October 9 (6:30 PM) – Strand Theatre, Corner of 5th St and Jefferson Ave, Moundsville

The Vampire Circus at the Capitol Theatre

Oglebay Fright Lights
October 10-12, 17-19, & 24-26 (6-10 PM) – Oglebay Resort, 465 Lodge Drive “Lights, Frights & Fun! Celebrate spooky season with Fright Lights! Wheeling Ghost Walk

Make a Pumpkin! Beginner Knitting Class
October 21 at 5 PM – Cockayne Farmstead, 1105 Wheeling Ave, Glen Dale “Make your own cute little pumpkin just in time for fall! This class is a beginner knitting class, no previous knitting experience required. All materials and tools will be provided. This is a three week class that begins Tuesday, October 21, and continues for the next three Tuesdays (until November 4) from 5-6pm. Cost of the class is $60 per person. MCHS members receive a 20% discount.”

Oglebay Institute Halloween Wine and Craft Beer Event
October 24 at 6:30 PM – Stifel Fine Arts Center, 1330 National Road, Wheeling “An Evening of Wine AND Beer! Oglebay Institute has combined its Art of Wine and Art & Ale craft beer series into one special event. Enjoy the best of both worlds Friday, October 24 at this Halloween-themed party! Dinner & A Movie: “Arsenic and Old Lace”
October 24 (Dinner at 6:30, Movie at 7:30) – Towngate Theatre, 2118 Market Street
“A unique movie theater in Wheeling, Towngate offers screenings of some of America’s most iconic films. Pre-screening dinner (6:30 p.m.), movie ticket & popcorn – $30 (Reservation required.) Movie only – $8 (No reservation required.) Moviegoers have the option to have dinner in Towngate’s social room prior to the screening. Park once and enjoy twice the fun! Dinners will be served promptly at 6:30 p.m. before each film. Oglebay Resort
No list of Wheeling scenic spots is complete without mentioning Oglebay Park. Choose between walking trails, short hikes, and longer excursions as you explore the park through peak season.
Heritage Port
Pick up a local snack, coffee, or even cocktail (thanks, PODA!) and sit at the pretty riverside park at Heritage Port and watch the leaves fall.

Walk, bike, run, or skip down Heritage Trail to North Wheeling or Warwood to take in the fantastic leafy tunnels and bright colors of autumn.

Bethany College
For a fun, unique location, visit the nearby, beautiful, and historic brick and ivy campus of Bethany College for cozy, dark academia vibes while the school buildings are covered in classic fall leaves. Even the drive up is worth it!

Wheeling Suspension Bridge
Wander along the historic Wheeling Suspension bridge for perfect leaf peeping opportunities and great views of the Ohio River, Downtown Wheeling, Wheeling Island, and Ohio.
