It’s many Wheeling residents’ favorite time of the year again! As you’ve probably noticed, the weather has turned a bit cooler and crisper, the mornings and evenings a bit dimmer, and the leaves just a little bit more golden. With those seasonal changes comes a much beloved autumn event here in Wheeling; a weekend-long hommage to Oktoberfest held annually up at Oglebay Park that features music, local food, and an artisan marketplace lining the walkways, along with a parade, mini contests, and even a fireworks display.
These days, the yearly event is so anticipated by locals and tourists alike that it is not uncommon to see attendees brave all sorts of weather and lengthy wait times just to be able to wander the park with a stein of beer or a warm pumpkin spice latte in hand.
The activities lineup just can’t be beat:
- German Rathskeller at Hess Shelter – Enjoy classic German and Bavarian folk music and polkas, folk dancing, German-inspired food, and seasonal beers in the most typical tribute to German Oktoberfests.
- Phil Maxwell Artists’ & Gourmet Market in the Mansion Woods – Wander the pathways and browse handmade goods, local artisan wares, and autumnal food vendors.
- The Ohio County Country Fair at Levenson Shelter – Visit our local County Fair with classic offerings such as quilting demonstrations, homegrown vegetable competitions, the 4-H pet show, and more.
- Oglebayfest Parade – Join the fun as organizations, schools, and clubs from the region parade through the park.
- Mini competitions – Test your skills with two fun, beer-centric competitions:
- Beer stein-holding competition Saturday night at Hess Shelter
- 0.5K Beer Dash around Shenk Lake at 11am on Sunday morning
- Special Pricing at The Good Zoo – “Pay Like a Kid Weekend” means that admission is just $13 for everyone.
This year, the 49th annual Oglebayfest takes place between Friday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 4th.
