The rededication of Wheeling’s “Spirit of the American Doughboy” monument will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2021 at 2 pm at Wheeling Park. The ceremony, which will be conducted by Wheeling’s American Legion Post 1, will occur at the monument site near National Road.
Please note: this will replace the time and venue of Post 1’s usual Memorial Day ceremony, which typically takes place at Heritage Port in the morning.
The Doughboy rededication ceremony will include music as well as participation by other regional Posts and dignitaries. General seating will be limited and not reserved.
The Wheeling Doughboy was recently restored by Venus Bronze Works in Detroit Michigan after a successful fundraising campaign by the restoration committee.
The original dedication of the monument took place on Memorial Day, May 30, 1931.
