A new initiative from the Ohio County Development Authority (OCDA) aims to bridge the gap between education and employment for young people in the Ohio Valley.
In partnership with HASULE Inc., the OCDA has launched a pilot internship program designed to connect students and skilled trade learners with real-world, hands-on experiences right here in Ohio County.
The effort is the first of its kind locally, and its goal is simple but ambitious: to help students explore meaningful careers while giving local employers a direct role in shaping the next generation of workers.
“This initiative is about more than internships—it’s about building intentional, local connections that inspire students to see their future here in Ohio County,” said Stephanie Hockenberry, Growth & Retention Manager for the OCDA. “By bringing education, career exploration, and local workforce needs into alignment, we’re planting the seeds for long-term growth and stronger communities.”

Building Local Pathways
Through partnerships with West Liberty University, Wheeling University, and a growing list of local businesses, nonprofits, and government offices, the program will create opportunities for students from middle school through college.
The pilot includes:

Grades 6–12 Career Exploration Modules that introduce students to different industries early on.

Internship and Apprenticeship Opportunities with local employers and community organizations.

College and Skilled Trade Partnerships that connect classroom learning to real-world applications.

A Digital Platform Powered by HASULE Inc. to match students with mentors, track progress, and align skills with workforce needs.
Ohio County Commissioner Zach Abraham emphasized how this program supports the area’s long-term vitality.
“Our future depends on giving our best and brightest a reason to stay. By creating intentional pathways from education to career, we’re working to ensure that Ohio County remains a place where young people don’t just grow up—they build their future.”
A Smarter Approach to Workforce Development
While workforce challenges aren’t unique to Ohio County, this pilot program takes a forward-thinking approach.
