The City of Wheeling Arts & Cultural Commission is seeking amateur and professional artists to artistically paint parking meters in the Centre Market area. This project is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to bring the arts and artists to the forefront in Wheeling, WV as a WV Certified Arts Community. The Centre Market Parking Meter Mural Project is a creative place making project designed to enhance other revitalization projects that have been successful in this area. This project also has the potential to be a jumping off point for other similar public art projects in the city with the goal of beautification and creation of art spaces in other neighborhoods.
The City of Wheeling Arts & Cultural Commission aims to paint 72+ meters in the Centre Market, Wheeling, WV area by the completion of the project in Spring 2016. The meters will be painted with custom designs based on community artist input. The Commission has opened a call for artists 18 years of age and older, and will jury and choose professional and amateur artists to begin the project. Applications are due on September 20 by Noon and Artists will be notified on Wednesday, September 25th. The application is at www.wheelingartsfest.com/meter-mural-submissions.
On October 9, 2015, the selected artists will start the painting project and have a kickoff party. Painting times will continue through the weekend. The City of Wheeling Arts & Cultural Commission has allowed a cushion for weather issues and other potential delays that may occur.
There will be a Best of Show award to one artist in the amount of $250 and there will be four additional Awards of Merit in the amount of $100 each. There will also be a $25 paint and supply stipend per meter. The competition and all artists participating will be juried by a panel determined by the City of Wheeling Arts & Cultural Commission.
Businesses are invited to sponsor a meter at the cost of $100 per meter. They will be allowed input into the meter style but the final design is at the discretion of the artist and subject to the jury process. No logos or names are allowed in the design.
