Welcome to Wheeling, College Crew!

We hear it all the time: “What’s there to do here?” And honestly, the list is endless.

Whether you’re climbing the hill to West Liberty University, cheering on the Cardinals at Wheeling University, getting that tight-knit campus feel at Bethany College, or kicking off your journey at WV Northern, you’ve just landed in a city that’s packed with more than meets the eye.

Picture this: riverfront concerts and live music, trails that feature public art, late-night bites that become traditions, and hidden gems you’ll be telling your friends about long after graduation. Wheeling is your classroom extension, your Friday-night escape, your Sunday reset—and sometimes, your “oops I stayed out too late” excuse.

So, if you’re asking what’s there to do here? Buckle up.

Wheeling Heritage: Bringing the City to Life

Wheeling Heritage is all about revitalization—preserving historic buildings, supporting local businesses, fueling the arts, and sparking projects that make downtown vibrant and alive.

We contribute in hands-on ways like hosting events, running artisan markets, operating the Wheeling Artisan Shop, overseeing Volunteer Wheeling, and curating local galleries. Whether you’re discovering a mural, exploring a restored building, or checking out a local gallery, Wheeling Heritage helps make the city feel alive and full of possibilities.

We don’t just honor Wheeling’s past, we are helping to shape its future. And now that you’re here, you’re part of that story too!

Parks, Trails & Outdoor Fun

Public art on Wheeling’s Heritage Trail.

Wheeling knows how to do the outdoors.

Oglebay Park – 1,600 acres of adventure. Hiking, skiing or snowboarding, a zoo, scenic gardens, even a planetarium—it’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure park.

Heritage Trail & Waterfront – The city’s 18-mile ribbon along the Ohio River. Perfect for biking, running, or that “get in green space and clear your mind” walk.

Entertainment & Arts

Yes, Wheeling has Netflix alternatives.

Capitol Theatre – West Virginia’s grandest stage. Concerts, comedy tours, and the Wheeling Symphony all take the stage.

Towngate Theatre & Victoria Theater – For the community-theater lovers and live-performance seekers—think plays, improv, and even a murder mystery or two.

Wheeling Nailers Hockey – Our very own minor-league hockey team brings the action to WesBanco Arena. Affordable tickets, a fired-up crowd, and fun theme nights (yep, sometimes dollar beers).

Waterfront Hall – A freshly restored riverside venue with live music and open mics, food, and a big-city vibe right in downtown Wheeling.

Stifel Fine Arts Center – Not just for looking—take a class, check out a gallery opening, or hit up a workshop.

Local Galleries – Wheeling’s creative streak shines in rotating exhibits around downtown. Great for inspiration (or a cool date idea).

Stay Plugged In – Follow along to local socials for information about various fairs and festivals you won’t want to miss! Foxfire Film, Oglebayfest, Calcified Music Fest, Backyard BBQ, and many more!

Food & Hangouts

Bring your appetite—you’re going to need it. Here are only a few of the amazing spots you can find!

Centre Market – The ultimate college hangout. Grab a famous, Coleman’s fish sandwich, a sloppy dogg, pizza, or ice cream, then wander through shops, antiques, and boutiques.

Sarah’s On Main – Brunch dreams come true. Parisian bakery, cozy, and Instagram-approved.

A perfect outdoor dining space for end of summer bites.

Vagabond Kitchen – Appalachian comfort food with a twist. Fancy enough for parents’ weekend, casual enough for a Friday night.

Generations Pub – A student-favorite for wings, live music, and catching the game.

The Highlands – Shopping, chain eats, and a movie theater all in one spot just outside of town.
