America 250 in Wheeling

As the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary in 2026, Wheeling is taking the opportunity to reflect on its own place in the nation’s story.

Through a yearlong series of events, exhibits, performances and educational programs, America 250 Wheeling will celebrate the people, places and traditions that helped shape both the city and the country. Led by Wheeling Heritage in partnership with local organizations, the initiative aims to connect residents and visitors with Wheeling’s rich history while inspiring conversations about the future.

“As we look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary, our National Heritage Area is proud to announce a year of events that honor the people, places and stories that shaped our nation—inviting everyone to celebrate our shared history, reflect on our journey, and help inspire the next 250 years,” said Scott Schenerlein, executive director of Wheeling Heritage.

Exploring Wheeling’s Past Through Art and Culture

One of the signature projects of America 250 Wheeling will be Main Street to Mountains: A Wheeling Portrait, Where Local Landscapes Meet the Spirit of a Nation.

The initiative includes a plein air painting event on June 20, an open call for artists and a juried competition, culminating in a public exhibition on display July 1 through Aug. 31 in the atrium of the Wheeling Artisan Center. The exhibit will invite artists to interpret Wheeling’s landscapes, neighborhoods and landmarks through their own creative lens while reflecting on the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.

The project highlights the important role art plays in preserving community identity and documenting the places that define us.

A Window Into Pioneer-Era Wheeling

History enthusiasts will have the opportunity to step back into Wheeling’s earliest days through In the Beginning: Wheeling Glass, Pewter and Ceramics from the Pioneer Days, opening June 14, 2026, at the Oglebay Institute Glass Museum.

The exhibition explores the craftsmanship and everyday objects that shaped life on the American frontier when Wheeling served as a vital gateway to the West. Visitors will encounter historical glass flasks commemorating Lafayette and George Washington, glass powder horns, cup plates, American pewter tableware and rare stoneware crafted by early Wheeling potters including J. Miller and Elijah Day.

Together, these artifacts tell the story of a community that supplied travelers, settlers and pioneers moving westward while showcasing the artistry and ingenuity that characterized frontier life.

The exhibition will remain on display through Jan. 3, 2027.

Learning Through the Revolutionary Era

This summer, the Ohio County Public Library will host a special America 250 edition of its popular People’s University lecture series.

Running July 2 through Aug. 20, the eight-part series will guide participants through key events leading up to and during the American Revolution, beginning with the aftermath of the Seven Years’ War and continuing through the fall of Charleston, South Carolina.

The program offers an opportunity for lifelong learners to gain deeper insight into the events that shaped the nation’s founding while connecting those stories to the region’s own history.

Music, Fireworks and Community Celebration

On July 4, America 250 Wheeling festivities will continue with a patriotic celebration featuring the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. The performance will honor the nation’s anniversary through music before concluding with a fireworks display over the city.

The event is expected to serve as one of the summer’s largest community gatherings, bringing residents together to celebrate both national and local pride.

Bringing Revolutionary History to Life

History will step off the page during Fort Henry Days on Sept. 5 and 6 at Oglebay Park.

The event will feature an authentic Revolutionary War encampment, battle reenactments, historical interpreters, period musicians and a market fair. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience aspects of 18th-century life firsthand while learning about the military and civilian experiences that shaped early America.

A Shared Moment of Reflection

The America 250 Wheeling celebration will conclude with an Interfaith Worship Service of Thanksgiving on Nov. 22 at 3:00pm at First Presbyterian Church.

The service will bring together members of different faith traditions in a spirit of gratitude and reflection, recognizing both the nation’s history and the community’s continued commitment to shaping its future.

A Community-Wide Effort

America 250 Wheeling is supported through a collaborative partnership that includes the City of Wheeling, Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation, First Presbyterian Church, Fort Henry Chapter of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution, Oglebay Institute, Ohio County Public Library, Wheeling Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Wheeling Heritage and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra.

Together, the organizations hope to create opportunities for residents of all ages to engage with history, celebrate local culture and consider how Wheeling’s story fits into the broader American narrative.
