May is Celiac Awareness Month—a time to spotlight an often misunderstood autoimmune disorder that affects millions. For those living with celiac disease, even a trace amount of gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye—can lead to serious, lasting health issues. That’s why education, empathy, and access to safe, gluten-free food are so important—not just in May, but every day.
While I grew up with other family members who had celiac disease, it wasn’t until my daughter, Stella, was diagnosed at five that I understood the full impact. Suddenly, every meal became a decision point. Birthday parties, school lunches, and even simple dinners out became cautious, carefully planned events.
Thankfully, Wheeling’s restaurant scene is stepping up to accommodate these dietary needs. Food is such a communal part of life—it’s where families bond, friends connect, and celebrations happen. When a restaurant makes it possible for us to enjoy a night out safely as a family, it means more than just a meal—it means inclusion, peace of mind, and the chance to just be together.
Wheeling’s Gluten-Free Friendly Restaurants
Here are a few standout spots around Wheeling that go the extra mile for gluten-free diners. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or dining with a loved one who has celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, these restaurants deserve a round of applause.
Please remember to always confirm gluten-free options and preparation methods with your server or a staff member to ensure your meal is prepared safely.
Generations Restaurant & Pub
A Wheeling staple, Generations offers a casual, welcoming environment with flexible menu options. While not exclusively gluten-free, they are responsive to dietary needs and willing to work with diners to adjust meals, offering gluten-free buns and cauliflower crusts as substitutes for many of their delicious sandwiches and pizzas.
Figaretti’s
Wheeling’s hometown spot for Italian cuisine, Figaretti’s offers gluten-free pasta—and goes a step further by cooking it in dedicated water to prevent cross-contact. That level of care makes a big difference to diners with celiac disease.
This was one of the first restaurants we visited after Stella’s diagnosis, and the experience left a lasting impression. The staff was kind, understanding, and made sure her meal was prepared safely—something that meant the world to us in those early, overwhelming days.
Avenue Eats
Located in the historic Waterfront Hall, Avenue Eats offers a cozy atmosphere with live music and a menu featuring fresh-cut fries, creative sandwiches, and salads. Their award-winning burgers can be enjoyed on a gluten-free bun.
Wheeling Noods
This fun and fresh noodle spot makes it easy for gluten-free diners to enjoy a safe, customizable meal. Their rice noodles are cooked separately from wheat noodles, reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
Sweet Abe’s Bakery
Sweet Abe’s is a charming bakery in Wheeling that specializes in gluten-free sweets, making it the perfect stop for anyone with a sweet tooth! Their selection of gluten-free baked goods—cupcakes, brownies, and pies—is thoughtfully baked at the beginning of the week, when the kitchen is clean, to reduce the risk of cross-contact. Whatever you’re craving, Sweet Abe’s offers gluten-free treats you can indulge in without worry.
The Public Market
Public Market is a grocery and café focused on fresh, local food, with a strong selection of gluten-free products, including trusted brands like Udi’s, Bob’s Red Mill, and Jolly Llama. Their kitchen prepares breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, using seasonal ingredients and offering clearly labeled gluten-free options. The Grab ‘n Go section is a favorite for quick, safe meals, and their $35 annual membership provides discounts, special orders, and 15% off the last Friday of each month—making it even easier to eat well on a gluten-free diet.
Later Alligator
A local favorite, Later Alligator specializes in crepes, fresh salads, homemade soups, and hot-off-the-press paninis—all served in a cozy, quirky atmosphere. They offer gluten-free buns, allowing guests to enjoy much of the menu with a few modifications.
Why Awareness Matters
What I’ve learned through this journey is that awareness isn’t just about knowing what celiac disease is—it’s about understanding its impact on everyday life. For families like mine, where gluten isn’t just an ingredient but a health threat, small acts of consideration can make a big difference.
Restaurants that offer safe gluten-free food aren’t just filling a dietary gap. They’re giving people like Stella a chance to feel included at the table—to enjoy a slice of birthday cake, a night out with her family, or a simple dinner without fear.
Celiac Awareness Month is about raising our voices, sharing our stories, and recognizing the individuals and businesses who make life a little easier—and a lot safer—for those who live gluten-free.
To every restaurant in Wheeling that takes the extra step: thank you. You’re not just serving food—you’re serving families, memories, and moments of joy!
