Wheeling is no stranger to rolling up its sleeves and working together—and this summer, local volunteers have two great chances to do just that.
From local creeks to the mighty Ohio River, our waterways are in need of some love after recent floods and ongoing litter buildup. That’s why the Ohio County Solid Waste Authority, Volunteer Wheeling, and a host of dedicated partners are calling on residents to pitch in, get a little muddy, and help restore the natural beauty around us.
Whether you’re a seasoned community volunteer or just someone who cares about clean water and clean streets, you’re invited to join one (or both!) of these upcoming cleanups.

Flood debris has taken a toll on the creek that runs through Elm Grove, and volunteers are needed to help clean it up. This is a roll-up-your-pants-legs kind of day—expect to get close to the water and help remove debris along the creek and its banks. Volunteers should wear weather-appropriate, water-safe clothes and shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle and sunscreen.
It’s a great way to give back to a neighborhood that’s always been full of heart.

The Ohio River Sweep is back—and this time, it’s coming to Wheeling Island. Hosted in partnership with ORSANCO (Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission) and supported by Volunteer Wheeling, this rescheduled cleanup is part of a larger, multi-state effort to clean up the shores of the Ohio River.
It’s not just about picking up trash—it’s about coming together to protect one of our region’s most important natural resources. Gloves, grabbers, and good vibes will be provided.

Why It Matters
Both events are about more than just litter. They’re about community, stewardship, and pride in place. They’re about leaving things better than we found them—and having a little fun while we’re at it.
“This kind of hands-on effort makes a real difference,” said event organizer Corey Danhart of OCSWA. “We’ve seen how much gets done when even a small group of people show up. It adds up fast.”
