Inside Esoterica: Wheeling’s Newest Gathering Space

Something quietly powerful is taking shape in downtown Wheeling.

Esoterica isn’t just a new place to grab a drink or get some work done, it’s a space built for connection, creativity, and being present. Part lounge, part coworking space, part art gallery, Esoterica is designed to invite people in and encourage them to stay a while.

“We gather to express, strengthen bonds, grow, and simply be,” reads the guiding philosophy on Esoterica’s website. “We deserve it.”

That idea, that we deserve spaces that feel intentional, human, and joyful, is at the heart of everything Esoterica hopes to offer.

What’s in a Name?

The word esoteric refers to knowledge meant for a smaller, more specialized group—something inward, intuitive, and not immediately obvious. It comes from the Greek word esōterikos, meaning within.

Esoterica builds on that idea, leaning into curiosity and discovery.

“It felt right,” said owner Spencer Porter. “Something a little mysterious, a little different. Something that invites you in. And we’re adding an ‘a’ to it, because let’s make it feminine.”

From the outside, Esoterica doesn’t give much away. Nestled at 2153 Main Street in downtown Wheeling, its garage-style exterior hints at something a little mysterious. But once you enter, the space really opens up. There are layers of various textures, all thoughtfully composed. It feels curated but in an expressive way; one without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of place that immediately makes you want to sit down and get cozy. Whether that be on the couch chatting, or at the dining table working.

One of the words that felt like a commonality in our conversation together was joy. Spencer shared, “I want this to be a container for our joy.”

Built for Real Life (IRL)

After time building community through publications, nonprofits, and creative projects, Spencer found herself craving something more tangible.

“I’ve spent a lot of time creating spaces metaphorically. Through pages, stories, and publications,” she said. “But I really wanted to build something where people could connect in real life.”

Esoterica is intentionally designed to encourage presence. Phones aren’t banned, but the invitation is clear: pause before pulling it out. Leave it in your bag. Be here with us.

“A lot of people, especially younger generations, have expressed they’re exhausted by being constantly online,” Spencer said. “They want places where they can just exist and connect.”

Esoterica aims to be that place.

Lounge, Coworking, and Membership Options

Esoterica will operate as a lounge, coworking space, and art-forward gathering place, with tiered memberships that allow people to engage with the space in ways that fit their lives and their schedules.

Coworking hours are designed for focused, daytime use, with the space open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As the day shifts into evening, Esoterica transitions into lounge mode. The lounge will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 4–10 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m.–2 a.m., Saturdays from 2 p.m.–2 a.m., and Sundays from 12–6 p.m., creating space for everything from casual conversations to late-night dancing.

Food, Drink, and Supporting Local Flavor

The lounge menu is designed for sharing and exploration. It will feature thoughtfully curated charcuterie boards, olive flights, and layered flavor pairings that feel elevated but approachable.

Guests are also encouraged to bring in takeout from local favorites throughout Wheeling, reinforcing Esoterica’s commitment to supporting the city’s growing food scene.

“We want people to feel comfortable bringing in food from places they love,” Spencer said. “It all really goes back to just being good neighbors.”

While Esoterica will offer beer, wine, champagne, and top-shelf spirits, Spencer is especially excited about the variety of non-alcoholic options that will be available.

“Not everything needs to revolve around alcohol,” she said. “There will be really yummy non-alcoholic beverages that you can enjoy while you’re here.”

Programming That Feels Like an Invitation

Esoterica’s calendar is designed to be flexible and ever-evolving alongside the people who show up.

Some of the recurring offerings will include:

YAPPY Hour (Wednesday–Friday, 4–6 PM): Specially priced drinks and space to connect with community.
Lectures & Libations (Thursdays): One-hour talks or panels featuring community experts. Imagine learning without the pressure of a classroom and with a drink in hand.
Friday Nights: Live music whenever possible!
The Wiggle Room (Saturday Nights 9pm-close): DJ-led dance nights, including occasional sets by geminispence herself.
Club Fellowship (Every Other Sunday): Intimate, family-style brunches led by chefs from around the region, limited to just 20 tickets.
Sunday DARTY-ing: Daytime party time with various activities. Think Formula One racing up on the projector or opening the garage doors into the sunshine.

“We don’t want things to feel static,” Spencer explained. “It’s about daring to explore, trying something new, and meeting people you might not otherwise meet.” She laughed, adding, “I joke with Dan Milleson all the time that we’re Waterfront Hall’s weird little step sister. We’re doing our own thing, and that’s exactly the point.”

Built With, and For, the Community

One thing Spencer is quick to emphasize: Esoterica is not about a single person.

“It’s not me. It’s not you. It’s we,” she said.

From volunteers to artists, guest DJs, designers, and builders, and just friends, Esoterica is being shaped through collective input. Furniture choices, finishes, and ideas were often crowdsourced, really allowing the space to reflect the community it’s meant to serve.

A Love Letter to Wheeling

Opening Esoterica is also an expression of belief in Wheeling and in the people who choose to build here.

“If you want to open a business downtown, you can do it,” Spencer said. “Just do it. Take the leap. This city wants you here.”

She credits the city, county, state, and local agencies for their support throughout the process, describing the experience as encouraging and accessible rather than daunting.

“Know yourself first. Refine your taste. Come from humility. Know your neighbors,” she added.

Spencer reflected that while her twenties were shaped by trial and error, everything she’s done since has led her to this moment. “Now it feels like it all makes sense,” she said. “I’m honestly just so excited.”

Where Place Becomes Feeling

Esoterica isn’t open just yet (IT WILL BE SOON!!), but its intention is already clear. It’s a place to enjoy coworking during the day, linger in the evening, dance on weekends, learn something new, and simply be.

As Wheeling continues to reimagine what our downtown can be, Esoterica is going to add something deeply human to the mix: a place that slowly becomes a feeling. When the doors open, the invitation is really quite simple and sincere: come as you are, bring a friend, and make yourself at home.

“We’re aiming for a February opening!” Spencer shared, and encouraged everyone to keep an eye on Esoterica’s social media for official details, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and updates as the opening approaches.
