Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. The name, blending “June” and “nineteenth,” has since become a national celebration of Black freedom, culture, and resilience. In Wheeling, Juneteenth has become a cherished tradition since its first local observance in 2019, organized during the city’s 250th anniversary.
Outdoor Celebration Canceled for June 19
After ongoing conversations and careful consideration, YWCA Wheeling has made the difficult decision to cancel the outdoor Juneteenth celebration originally scheduled for Thursday, June 19 at Heritage Port.
This includes the vendor market, live speakers, and all outdoor performances.
This decision was not made lightly. The recent flooding throughout Wheeling and the greater Ohio Valley has deeply impacted many of our neighbors. In response, organizers are choosing to turn this moment into an opportunity for community service, support, and giving back.
Additionally, the forecast calls for more rainfall — which could further complicate vendor logistics, impact attendance, and pose safety risks. Prioritizing the well-being of the community is at the heart of this shift.
