Opening Day Blooms at Wheeling Park High School Greenhouse

There is nothing quite like greenhouse season, and as an alum of Wheeling Park High School, it is especially exciting to see this tradition in full bloom again. Opening day is here, and the annual WPHS greenhouse sale is officially underway!

Starting today, the greenhouse is open to the public and packed with student-grown favorites. You will find beautiful hanging baskets, vegetable starters, ferns, and potted plants, all grown and cared for by students in the school’s Career and Technical Education programs.

Hours run weekdays from May 4 through May 11 from 3 to 6 p.m., then shift to 3 to 5 p.m. from May 11 through June 5. It is the perfect after-school stop to grab something fresh for your porch, patio, or garden.

One of the best parts of the greenhouse is knowing who is behind it. Students are leading the work from start to finish. They plant, water, organize, and help customers, gaining hands-on experience that goes far beyond the classroom. It is not just about growing plants. It is about learning responsibility, communication, and how to bring a product to life and share it with the community. It is honestly so great to see young people building these skills in real time.

And the plants truly deliver. Kristin L. shared, “These plants are incredibly hearty and hold up beautifully all season long. Everything I’ve purchased has thrived!” Michael C. added, “The tomato plants I got last year absolutely took off. I had one of my best harvests yet.”

As you start to look for the perfect gifts for Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, or National Nurses Week, the greenhouse offers something that feels both personal and meaningful. It is a simple way to celebrate someone while also supporting local students and hands-on education.

The greenhouse is a full team effort across multiple CTE classes, and it shows in every detail. From the quality of the plants to the way the space is run, everything reflects the time, care, and pride these students put into their work.

If you have not stopped by before, make this your year. And if you have, you already know how special it is. Opening day is here, so go check it out and support the next generation of growers, creators, and entrepreneurs!!
