A note from Erin:
“I’m excited to collaborate with Wheeling Heritage to bring you a series that focuses on voter registration and election news — explaining new laws, clearing up misunderstandings and misinformation, and helping shed light on how the whole process works. This monthly article will be fact-based, so whether you’re not political at all, a casual voter, or staunchly left, right, or somewhere in between, the information shared here affects you.”
As part of this ongoing series, Erin continues to share key updates that impact local voters. This month’s edition covers an important change coming to West Virginia’s Republican Primary Elections; one that will directly affect thousands of unaffiliated and independent voters.
What’s Changing in 2026?
In recent years, unaffiliated and independent voters have been allowed to participate in West Virginia’s Republican Primary Elections. Due to a 65-54 vote in January 2024 by the WV Republican Executive Committee, that’s going to change.
West Virginia’s primary elections have been semi-closed, meaning voters affiliated with any of the state-recognized political parties would only receive that party’s ballot during the primary elections, while unaffiliated, independent, and no-party voters could request a Democrat, Mountain, or Republican ballot.
Beginning with the 2026 Primary Election, only voters registered with the Republican Party will receive a Republican ballot.
What This Change Means for Voters
This could cause some confusion at the polls for the many voters who are accustomed to voting for Republican candidates but choose to register as no party. Of course, by the time voters are at the polls, it will be too late to update their registration.
It’s likely the WV GOP will heavily advertise this change as the state moves closer to the Primary in May 2026, but there’s no need to wait to update your registration.
Ohio County currently has almost 9,000 independent and no-party voters. If you or someone you know is an unaffiliated voter planning to participate in the Republican Primary Election, make sure to update your voter registration no later than April 21, 2026.
Unaffiliated, independent, and no-party voters will still have the option of a Democrat or Mountain Party ballot. If voters do not specify which ballot they’d like, they will be issued a non-partisan ballot.
You can register to vote or update/change your registration online at sos.wv.gov, at the DMV, or in person at:
1500 Chapline Street, Room 215, Wheeling, WV 26003.
