Downtown Wheeling

Downtown Wheeling is the center of the business district and is located on the banks of the Ohio River. While much of Downtown is commercially focused, there are some residences, predominantly apartments and lofts. It is steeped in history as the birthplace and first capital of the state of West Virginia. The city’s lasting and ever evolving character is retained in the unique architectural gems, many of which have been creatively repurposed for modern uses. 

Downtown Wheeling has the resources and amenities of a city, yet the involved community of a small town. It is a center of activity where you can be on a first-name basis with the neighborhood barista while also enjoying the bustle of a city. Numerous restaurants, bars, markets, and shops supply delicious local food and spaces such as the Capitol Theatre and Heritage Port provide endless entertainment. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge and the Wheeling Heritage Trail offer easy and safe access to activities such as running, walking, and biking.

The historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge, built in 1849, is one of Wheeling's most well-known monuments. It connects downtown to Wheeling Island.

Heritage Port, located along the Ohio River in downtown, is a popular attraction for residents and tourists alike. The park and amphitheatre host many festivals, concerts, and community events.
